Normal function

It protects the eave and, when vented and unobstructed, supplies intake air to the attic ventilation system.

What a homeowner may notice

  • Sagging, stained, cracked, missing, animal-damaged, or blocked panels.
  • Paint failure or rot near gutters and fascia.
  • No visible intake where a ridge-vent system relies on soffit air.
  • Insulation blocking the vent path from inside the attic.

Professional inspection

Check soffit and fascia together, inspect the attic side for baffles/insulation, determine whether panels are vented or solid, and trace any water from gutter overflow or roof edge.

Repair or replacement path

Replace damaged panels, restore vented/solid pattern, install baffles or clear insulation, repair rafter-tail/fascia damage, and correct edge drainage.

Typical materials and equipment

Aluminum/vinyl/wood soffit, vent strips, baffles, fascia materials, fasteners, paint, and access equipment.

When to act

Open or wet soffit can expose the attic and allow pests/water; correct it with the roof-edge source.
