Ridge and hip caps
The specially shaped shingles or metal pieces that cover the high points where roof planes meet. A ridge vent may be installed beneath the cap shingles.
Normal function
Caps shed water and wind at the roof peak and can cover a ventilation slot when a ridge-vent system is used.
What a homeowner may notice
- Cracked, missing, lifted, or wind-displaced cap pieces.
- Exposed nails, gaps at the ridge, or a vent that is crushed or blocked.
- Leak or daylight near the peak, especially after wind.
- Uneven cap alignment or sealant-only repairs.
Professional inspection
View the ridge and hips from multiple angles. Check cap overlap, fasteners, seal strip, end closures, vent slot continuity, and whether the cap is compatible with the field shingles and wind exposure.
Repair or replacement path
Remove failed caps, inspect the vent and deck, replace with compatible cap shingles and manufacturer-specified fasteners, and close the ridge ends. Do not block intake ventilation while repairing exhaust.
Typical materials and equipment
Hip/ridge cap shingles, ridge vent if needed, approved nails, end plugs, sealant only where specified, chalk line, and disposal.
When to act
Repair before the next major wind/rain event when caps are missing or lifted.
What moves the price
Ridge length, roof pitch, wind damage, vent replacement, brittle shingles, chimney intersections, access, and matching.
