Normal function

Fascia helps close and protect the roof edge. Sound fascia gives gutters a stable attachment point; it is not a substitute for drip edge or flashing.

What a homeowner may notice

  • Soft wood, peeling paint, staining, insect holes, gutter pull-away, or rot behind the gutter.
  • Water running behind the gutter or at the roof edge.
  • Exposed end grain, open seams, or fascia wrapped without correcting the water source.
  • Soffit and rafter-tail damage at the same area.

Professional inspection

Trace the wet area to drip edge, gutter, flashing, and roof covering. Probe suspect wood, check rafter tails, confirm fastener holding, and inspect the back of the gutter before pricing a cosmetic repair.

Repair or replacement path

Remove unsound fascia, replace with compatible treated/primed material or approved wrap, correct the roof edge/gutter source, restore hangers and seal joints, and prime/paint exposed wood.

Typical materials and equipment

Fascia lumber or composite, primer/paint/wrap, fasteners, drip edge, gutter hangers, sealant, and access equipment.

When to act

Fix the water source at the same time; replacing fascia alone will not stop repeat rot.
