Drip edge and rake edge metal
Metal edge flashing at eaves and rakes that supports the shingle edge and directs runoff away from the fascia and into the gutter or beyond the wall.
Normal function
It keeps water from curling behind the roof edge, protects the deck/fascia, and helps manage water at the gutter line.
What a homeowner may notice
- Exposed plywood edge, wet or rotten fascia, staining behind the gutter, missing metal at rakes, bent edge metal, or water running behind the gutter.
- Shingles overhanging too far or not far enough to land in the gutter.
- Edge metal installed after the wrong layer or with loose fasteners.
- Gutter apron gap or a gutter mounted below the runoff path.
Professional inspection
Trace the edge continuously, including corners and transitions. Check metal overlap, fasteners, shingle overhang, fascia condition, and gutter relationship. Compare with the adopted code and manufacturer instructions for the work being performed.
Repair or replacement path
Remove or lift the affected roof edge, replace/add compatible drip or rake edge, repair fascia/deck as needed, and restore shingle courses so water enters the intended drainage path.
Typical materials and equipment
Galvanized or aluminum drip/rake edge, membrane, fasteners, fascia repair lumber, shingles, sealant where specified, and gutter hardware.
When to act
A failed edge can cause ongoing fascia/deck wetting and should be corrected before it becomes a larger roof-edge rebuild.
What moves the price
Edge length, gutter removal, fascia rot, corner details, roof pitch, material compatibility, and shingle brittleness.
