Underground downspout drain lines

A solid, non-perforated pipe route that carries roof runoff underground to an approved outlet such as a pop-up emitter, daylight outlet, approved storm connection, or designed infiltration feature.

Normal function

It keeps roof runoff off walkways and away from the foundation while preserving a controlled discharge path that can be cleaned and maintained.

What a homeowner may notice

  • Buried line backs up, outlet never opens, lawn sinkhole/settlement, soggy area, erosion at the emitter, or water still pooling at the foundation.
  • Crushed/collapsed pipe, roots, sediment, disconnected fittings, or a line with no cleanout.
  • Downspout overflows during rain despite a clear leader.
  • Pipe discharges into a French drain or dry well with no sizing/maintenance plan.

Professional inspection

Trace the route, locate utilities, test from the downspout, inspect/flush the outlet, check slope and pipe size, and use a camera or cleanout when blockage is suspected. Confirm the outfall is legal, stable, and not directed at a neighbor.

Repair or replacement path

Expose and replace collapsed or poorly graded sections, add cleanouts, reset fittings, install suitable solid pipe and emitter, and restore the trench with stable grade and erosion control.

Typical materials and equipment

Solid PVC/corrugated drain pipe, fittings, cleanouts, pop-up emitter or headwall, bedding, geotextile where specified, gravel, topsoil/sod, and marking equipment.

When to act

A failed buried leader can send water back to the foundation unseen; test it when overflow or wet soil appears.
